Leadership Lab: Working the Floor at Professional Conferences

Leadership Lab: Working the Floor at Professional Conferences

Friday October 31, 3:30 - 5:00 pm, Saieh Hall 021

With the AHA, ASA, APSA and other annual professional conferences coming up, networking season is in full swing. Both in academia and in other professions, building a professional network is a key to finding out about opportunities for putting your talents to work and advancing your career. Still, doctoral students often miss out on good networking opportunities for a variety of reasons, from concerns about how to approach a star professor, to uncertainty about how to follow up on initial conversations or how to put one’s network to work. In this workshop, we will discuss best practices for acquiring, maintaining, and leveraging relationships with key players in your field or profession. Our discussion panel will consist of:

  • William Weaver (Assistant Director of Graduate Program Engagement, GSA), moderator
  • Matthew Christian (Associate Provost and Chief of Staff)
  • Kristen Schilt (Professor, Department of Sociology)
